GIS/GPS Mapping

Civil/Environmental Resources

Entech’s Civil/Environmental Resources Group has invested significant resources into the Geographic Information System (GIS) and Global Positioning System (GPS) fields to meet the current and future needs of our clients and provide more comprehensive services to effectively utilize digital information in planning and design.

GIS is a technology that is designed and used to efficiently capture, store, update, analyze, and display many forms of data from a geographic perspective. The GIS system is based on a structured database that describes the world in geographic terms. Information is gathered from field reconnaissance using GPS equipment to accurately locate the features required for a particular project. Information is also gathered from public sources and incorporated into an overall database. GIS can then link this information (such as land use, parcels, utilities, and other applicable data) to shape files, and layers the information to give the user a better understanding of how it all interrelates. The electronic information contained in the database is referred to as spatial data and can be utilized as an effective planning tool for our clients.

GIS differs from other mapping and graphical computer applications, such as AutoCAD, in that all spatial data is geographically referenced to a map projection in an earth coordinate system. Digital maps of the underlying geographic information can be constructed and used to support queries, analyses, and editing of all the information.

GIS is commonly used for utility and resource management, planning, computer modeling, and land development. GIS can provide you with powerful information, not just how objects and features are, but how they may be in the future based on changes you apply. You can digitally map a location in a specified coordinate system, the quantities of certain criteria within a region, what’s nearby, and plan for your future needs.

The purpose of providing this service for our clients is so they can manage their infrastructure, answer questions, and make more informed decisions. Entech has discovered many uses for these services and each is a better way to provide unrivaled service to our clients.
