DEPARTMENT OF CONSERVATION AND NATURAL RESOURCES

Kittanning Forest District 8 Office Addition

Entech assisted the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources with the design and construction of a new addition to the existing District 8 Office building at the Kittanning State Forest, located in Clarion, PA. The objective of the project was to provide a new 50 person Conference Room/Employee Training Center in the addition, and to conduct minor modifications to the existing office building in order to accommodate the daily operations of the office staff.

The addition was designed to be accessed from both stories of the existing building and to allow staff to utilize support areas in the new addition without interrupting functions occurring in the Conference Room. The building modifications and additional square footage also required the existing utility systems to be modified in order to satisfy the greater demands. Accessibility and functional layout issues as well as additional parking and re-grading needs were also addressed.

A defining objective of the project was to achieve the US Green Building Council’s LEED certification by adhering to green building practices and energy efficiency guidelines. Credits were gained in all LEED project certification categories by conforming to requirements in such areas as storm water design, water efficient landscaping and water use reduction, optimization of energy performance, reuse of structural and non-structural elements, and use of sustainable materials including recycled materials, regional materials and certified wood. The resulting project was successfully sympathetic to the existing building and harmonized with the surrounding community.
