As licensed professionals, architects and engineers are governed by federal, state and local laws. Those laws are constantly changing in ways that affect our practice. In every legislative session, bills that may impact professional licensure, liability, access to funding, taxation, and the regulatory environment are proposed. With so much at stake, we need to ensure our voices are heard, so that sweeping changes aren’t made heedlessly that negatively impact the duty and ability of architects and engineers to design, manage, and improve the built environment safely, efficiently, and beautifully for our communities.
Engaging in advocacy is a way all of us can bring the voice of the profession to the decision-makers at all levels of government. I have committed myself to advocacy on behalf of architects and engineers through my role as AIA Pennsylvania’s Government Affairs Chair and some of my recent efforts are featured in the July, 2015 issue of the Architect Magazine article “Design Is Not Enough” that chronicles various issues where advocacy played and will play an important role in the future of our professions.
