Biological Nutrient Removal (BNR) upgrade

Lititz Sewer Authority Lititz, PA

Projects

Overview

Together with Lititz Sewer Authority, Lititz Borough, and Severn Trent Environmental Services, Inc., we designed and managed the construction of a Biological Nutrient Removal (BNR) upgrade in accordance with the Chesapeake Bay Initiative at the Lititz Wastewater Treatment Facility.

Solution Details

The project included converting the existing two-stage BOD removal and nitrification process to a five-stage BNR process. This was accomplished without the addition of any new tanks. The design of the new BNR process was coupled with upgrades to existing ancillary processes, as well as the addition of new treatment process components, including influent fine screening, side stream phosphorous removal, tertiary filtration, ultraviolet disinfection, augmented aerobic digestion, and biosolids drying system.

The upgrades resulted in improved water quality of the discharge receiving stream by reducing total nitrogen and phosphorus lads and ultimately, improvement of the Chesapeake Bay waters. The project has more than fulfilled the goals and regulatory compliance of the Chesapeake Bay Initiative and the Lititz Sewer Authority, while also affording the Authority the future ability to sell Nitrogen and Phosphorus credits.
