Industries that proactively manage their environmental responsibilities position themselves to reduce risk and avoid costly non-compliance fines, legal actions, and tarnished reputations. My Environmental Compliance colleagues and I have compiled a few key tips for proactive environmental compliance management to support you in effectively navigating the complexities of environmental compliance.

  1. Stay Informed and Updated: Environmental regulations can change frequently. Ensure that your team is always up to date with the latest requirements and guidelines. Check out PFAS Central, Entech’s one-stop portal for all things PFAS in industry, water, and wastewater. We also have blogs on boiler permitting, annual environmental reporting requirements, Spill Prevention, Control and Countermeasure Plans, and Alternative Hydrogeologic Evaluation.
  2. Develop a Compliance Plan: Create and implement a plan that identifies potential risks, outlines standard procedures and milestones, and assigns responsibilities. Regularly review and update your plan to accommodate new regulations and operational changes.
  3. Stay on Top of Reporting Deadlines: Have operations in Pennsylvania? Print and hang our PA environmental compliance calendar to keep it front-of-mind, and to keep digital copies from getting lost in your inbox or desktop files. We also recommend saving all applicable deadlines to your Outlook calendar with reminders.
  4. Start Gathering Data Early: Perform your data gathering well in advance of reporting deadlines to ensure adequate time for all subsequent steps and to avoid last-minute fire drills. Better yet, keep your data updated on a more frequent basis to keep it in your purview, which enables your team to identify areas of non-compliance early and allows for prompt corrective actions.
  5. Create Awareness through Training: Conduct compliance training and provide easy access to compliance resources to ensure that your employees understand the importance of environmental compliance and their specific roles in maintaining it. Check out our Environmental Compliance Training 101 blog for more information on what topics you should include, and when and who you should train.
  6. Maintain Accurate Records: Keep detailed and accurate records of all compliance-related activities, including inspections, training sessions, and corrective actions. This documentation is essential for proving compliance during audits and inspections.
  7. Engage with Stakeholders: Communicate regularly with employees, customers, regulatory agencies, and your local community. Transparency and collaboration can build trust and improve compliance outcomes.
  8. Invest in Technology: Utilize environmental management software to streamline compliance processes, track performance, generate reports, and enable communication. Software tools can reduce uncertainties in a compliance management program, providing easily updatable and searchable databases and consistent reporting formats.

These tips are about more than just risk reduction – they’re about strategic advantage. Use this advantage to enhance your reputation, which is built on trust. Trust builds as you continually fulfill your responsibilities. Helping you dig deeper than just compliance, these tips will drive you forward and enable you to position yourself as an industry leader.
