Energy Audit & Chilled Water Study

MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Clinton, MD

Projects

Overview

We performed an Energy Audit at MedStar’s Southern Maryland Hospital to identify Energy Conservation Measures (ECMs) in an effort to reduce the energy profile of the hospital. One of the ECMs identified was the upgrade and optimization of the hospital’s central chilled water plant. Prior to implementation of the ECM, the hospital wanted to install the proper metering to measure the existing energy usage of the plant, create a baseline energy profile, and allow for measurement and verification post-implementation. We guided the hospital through the selection and installation of the metering.

Solution Details

Following our Energy Audit, which identified central chilled water plant upgrade and optimization as an ECM that would reduce energy use on the hospital campus, we worked with the hospital to select the proper metering. Chilled water and electric meters for the chilled water plant were then integrated into the existing Johnson Control Building Automation System. Meters were installed on all three chillers to measure and record CHW usage data, and the required hardware was purchased to allow for multiple years of data storage from the BAS system.

The meters allowed the hospital to measure their existing energy usage, provide a baseline, and accommodate measurement and verification that would follow the implementation of the recommended ECM.
