Overview

Entech’s work on a renewable natural gas (RNG) interconnect project demonstrated what disciplined engineering and execution-focused design-build delivery can achieve. We lead a team to design & build a 650 MMBtu/day interconnect station, which receives utility-grade RNG from a food waste anaerobic digestion facility and delivers it into the natural gas distribution system, via a short pipeline. Following completion of the Phase 1 engineering design package, the team transitioned directly into Phase 2 Construction Services, leading procurement, fabrication oversight, field services support, and commissioning activities.

Solution Details

Phase 1: A Strong Technical Foundation

The project was built on a rigorous and highly coordinated design approach established during Phase 1. That technical foundation enabled a seamless transition into construction, ensuring alignment between design intent, constructability, and operational performance. Maintaining continuity between phases reduced execution risk and supported consistent quality across all disciplines.

Phase 2: Integrated Execution

As the design-builder, Entech provided full-scope delivery across Phase 2, including:

  • Procurement of critical system components such as actuated valves, filter separators, metering and regulation systems, odorization equipment, and prefabricated analyzer buildings
  • Oversight of shop fabrication to verify compliance with design specifications, material requirements, and quality standards
  • On-site construction representation, including daily monitoring, QA/QC tracking, and coordination with project stakeholders
  • Pressure testing and certified welding inspection oversight, , along with safety verification
  • Commissioning support for metering, control, odorization, and analytical systems
  • Comprehensive project closeout documentation and system turnover

This level of oversight ensured that each component, from fabrication through commissioning, was delivered in accordance with strict technical and operational requirements.

Field Execution and Constructability

A defining strength of the project was the level of constructability achieved through disciplined engineering coordination and prefabrication planning. Because the interconnect was developed on a greenfield site, the project team maximized opportunities for off-site fabrication and modular assembly, reducing field labor requirements and accelerating installation.

Entech’s detailed design package enabled fabrication and installation teams to work directly from engineered dimensions and coordinated layout data with minimal field adjustment. Concrete foundations were established using GPS-based coordinates derived directly from the design model, allowing prefabricated piping systems and equipment skids to align precisely during installation.

According to the construction team, the accuracy of the engineering and fabrication coordination significantly streamlined field execution:

“We took the drawing set, established the concrete pad locations from the GPS coordinates, and built the piping directly from the engineered dimensions. Everything bolted into place in the field. Other than a few final tie-in welds required for shipping, we had to rework nothing. All piping was installed on the pads within two weeks.”

The result was a highly efficient construction process with minimal rework, reduced schedule risk, and accelerated system readiness for commissioning. This level of execution demonstrated the value of integrating engineering precision with design-build delivery and fabrication oversight from the earliest stages of project development.

Technical Execution and Commissioning

The project included integration of complex gas handling and control systems, including filter separators, actuated valve assemblies, regulators, custody transfer metering, and odorization systems. Prefabricated gas analysis and telemetry buildings supported system monitoring and control functions.

Entech directed QA/QC efforts throughout fabrication and construction, including certified welding inspections and structured document control. During commissioning, the team coordinated closely with equipment vendors to execute critical safety procedures such as oxygen purging and nitrogen flushing, followed by system calibration and performance verification prior to service activation.

Commissioning leadership played a key role in successful system startup. Entech’s team brought a high level of technical rigor and field execution discipline to the process, ensuring that systems were tested, validated, and placed into service in accordance with design and operational requirements.

Supporting Renewable Natural Gas Infrastructure

The interconnect will provide a reliable pathway for renewable natural gas to enter the utility distribution system, supporting the beneficial reuse of organic waste and contributing to broader decarbonization efforts.

This project reflects Entech’s strength as a technical specialist in RNG infrastructure, delivering precise engineering, disciplined execution, and fully integrated design-build services for complex energy projects.
