MEP Renovation & Expansion

Shippensburg University Shippensburg, PA

Projects

Overview

Shippensburg University’s (SHIP) three-story Ceddia Union Building (CUB) was needing renovations, as 25 years had passed since its last. CUB needed to grow and change, to meet current students’ needs, as the campus center housing; student organizations, small-scale events, food court, and the bookstore. Working with H2L2 Architects, we provided the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineering design for the CUB’s renovation and 60,000+ sq.ft. addition, which received LEED® Silver Certification for energy saving design.

Solution Details

Mechanical upgrades incorporated a new variable air volume system that will result in less energy use through reduced fan energy consumption and improved room temperature control. The building server rooms were conditioned by independent split-system, ductless air conditioning units to allow for increased control and equipment performance. A new 500-ton, air-cooled chiller, along with a new emergency generator to provide back-up power, was also included. Electrical improvements focused on telecom upgrades, new lighting throughout the building, and new sound equipment in the multi-purpose room and cafeteria. We also reviewed building codes and ordinances, and modified the existing fire protection system to meet all regulations.

With the building completed, the students and community have a highly functional space, for on-campus activities, and the University has a high performing building that creates flexible and comfortable spaces, while saving on energy costs.
