MEP Design Heating & Air

Moravian University Bethlehem, PA

Projects

Overview

Moravian University engaged Entech to provide MEP design assistance for heating and air conditioning upgrades for the eight-building complex which makes up the west end of Moravian’s Priscilla Payne Hurd Campus in Bethlehem, PA. We designed and prepared plans to a Design Development level, developing the plans for construction and obtaining permits for the Design/Bid/Build project.

The intention for the upcoming heating season was to maintain the existing oil-fired steam boilers so they could continue to provide steam service throughout the complex, with the remainder of the Base Scope of Work occurring during the following summer.

Solution Details

Work included replacing the existing oil-fired steam boilers and associated steam components with condensing gas-fired hot water boilers and new hot water pumps, one set of boilers being provided in West Hall and one set of boilers in Foy Hall, each set to serve a portion of the entire eight-building complex.

We also upgraded the existing gas service to the complex to accommodate the associated boiler loads and tolerances, and provided new heating hot water and dual temp mains throughout the complex to replace the steam piping.

Existing chilled water systems (chillers, pumps, distribution) were upgraded, including the replacement of the existing 60 ton chiller serving Foy and Payne and the existing 80 ton chiller serving Brethren’s and West, and we renewed and upgraded the domestic water heating system currently located in West Hall basement.

In addition, we replaced/upgraded electrical distribution equipment and existing controls systems as needed to support HVAC system upgrades. The renovation modernized the learning environment and replaced all MEP systems, which were at the end of their life cycle.
