Overview
The Municipal Authority of the Borough of Minersville’s Water Treatment Plant (WTP) serves approximately 3,500 residential and commercial customers in the town of Minersville and surrounding areas.
The filter media in the WTP had reached the end of its useful life. The filter media acts as a physical barrier to capture and remove suspended particles, sediments and other contaminants from water as it flows through.
Minersville engaged us to rehabilitate four (4) gravity filters, including replacement of the media and associated appurtenances.
Solution Details
We provided design, bidding assistance, and services during construction for replacement of the filter media in the up-flow clarifier and in the down-flow side of all four water treatment units. Each unit measured 17 ft. by 8 ft. This included calculating the total media quantity required with consideration of the existing quantities already on-site.
The project included:
- Removal, inspection, and re-installation of all air header nozzles
- Cleaning and painting filters
- Installation of four (4) air relief butterfly valves and three (3) actuators
- Inspection, service and replacement of two (2) blower units
Replacement of the filter media was essential for Minersville to improve water quality by ensuring optimal removal of contaminants, reducing maintenance costs by preventing clogging and strain on the system, and maintaining operational efficiency.
